Chuck Yeager
General Chuck Yeager (Born 1923 in Myra, WV) was the first person to break the sound barrier. He did so in the experimental X-1 aircraft pictured in the photograph on October 14, 1947. His feat was featured in the movie “The Right Stuff” where he was portrayed by actor Sam Shepard (below). He went on to break many other speed and altitude records over his distinguished military career.
