Jimmy Carter was the 39th President of the United States, serving from 1977-1981. Prior to election as President, Carter served as Governor of the State of Georgia. While serving as President, Carter started two new Cabinet level departments in the US Government, The Department of Energy, and the Department of Education. The highlight of his Presidency was a negotiated peace between Israel and Egypt that he brokered in 1979. Since he left office, he has been very active working on humanitarian issues around the Globe and has been used by numerous Presidents as a Diplomatic Envoy during a number of world Crisis’s. For his efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. President Carter has been a prolific author since leaving office, having written 21 of his 23 books since he left the Presidency. He has been a vocal critic of the policies of recently departed President George W. Bush and of the Iraq War. President Carter is the only US President that I have had the privilege to actually see in person, having seen him in 1978 while I was in Junior High School.
