
John Glenn (Born 1921 in Cambridge, OH) is a former NASA Astronaut and long-time US Senator from Ohio. One of the original “Mercury 7″ Astronauts, He was the first American to orbit the earth, doing so in 1962 aboard his spacecraft “Friendship 7″. In 1998, he returned to space as a member of the Space Shuttle Crew and at 77 yrs old, became the oldest person ever to travel into outer space. He served as a US Senator from the state of Ohio from 1974-1999. As a US Marine Corps pilot, he saw action in both World War 2 and the Korean War and was awarded 6 Distinguished Flying Cross medals and 19 Air Medals. He and his wife Annie have been married since 1943. John Glenn and Scott Carpenter are the only surviving members of the Mercury 7.
