Joan Fontaine (Born 1917 in Tokyo, Japan) is an Academy Award winning British Stage and Film Actress. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1942 for her role in the film “Suspicion”. She was one of Hollywood’s most prolific actresses of the 1930′s and 1940′s culminating with three Academy Award nominations for Best Actress from 1941-1944. Her other major film roles included “Rebecca”, “The Constant Nymph”, “Gunga Din”, “Jane Eyre”, “South Pacific”, “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”, “Island in the Sun”, and many others. She is the sister of famed “Gone with the Wind” actress Olivia DeHavilland. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk-of-Fame. She is the only actor or actress to ever win an Academy Award in a film directed by famed director Alfred Hitchcock. She was romantically linked to Howard Hughes and he is known to have proposed to her on at least two occasions. Her last film role was in 1966. She became estranged from her sister when they were both nominated for Best Actress Oscars in 1941. I had sent one of these photos for her to sign and she was kind enough to send back my photo and two others all signed. She is now 91 years old and resides in Carmel, California.
Autograph #150 in Collection.

I am trying to remember the name of a 30-40′s era actress. She was famous for a hair style, down usually 1/2 covering her face. She was attracitve but not exceptionally beautiful…just can’t remember her name. something like Shayna maybe?

Nope. ALL Joan Fontaine. The first autographed photo is one I sent her. The other two are one’s that she sent me. The pic with Cary Grant is a publicity photo from “Suspicion” and the most recent photo is from TIME magazine. Veronica Lake had a good resemblance but these are all 100% Joan Fontaine.

Your pics of Ms Fontaine are so good! What year was the last pic taken.(bottom photo)..where she’s looking so elegant and regal.. and is yours a color pic? So so pretty – and so sad about Joan’s and Olivia’s estrangement. Do you have a recent photo of Olivia to post?
